THERE ARE BRAS…THEN, THERE ARE BRAS By Just Underthings

December 16th, 2008

THERE ARE BRAS  … THEN, THERE ARE BRAS

As many of us know (especially those who are more “endowed”), the bra is an important foundation garment because of its essential role of supporting and shaping the breasts of the wearer’s figure. I was surprised to learn that the evolution of the bra “concept” can be traced back to the ancient Romans. For athletics, women wore “bandages” over their breasts to secure and protect them during vigorous activity. The bra, in its more recognizable appearance was originally developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to replace the tight-fitting and often uncomfortable corset. Many women found that the corset’s tightly laced fit, often made it difficult to breathe, and in some cases caused the painful displacement of internal organs. To a more minor extent corsets were adopted to by men during the time of the French Revolution. From the 1790’s to the 1840’s, men called “Dandies,” wore corsets to enhance their body shape, giving them smaller waists and broader looking shoulders and chests. Currently the bra is considered the accepted standard for supporting a woman’s breasts in many areas of the world.

The Ideal Bra

Today the bra is worn to support and enhance breast shape during everyday activities. The sports bra specialized to provide enhanced support should be worn to more firmly support and restrain breasts during exercise. The bra may also be worn to preserve modesty or to present a certain style or image of femininity. Bras are typically designed to lift the breasts, holding them in a particular position for a more youthful look or for enhancing cleavage.

The horizontal band and cups should provide most of the support, rather than the shoulder straps, which are responsible for a number of health problems that are shoulder strain related. The band should actually support about 80% of the weight of the breasts.

  • The underband that runs around the body under the breasts, should be horizontal, should not ride up in the back, and should be snug, secure, and comfortable.
  • If the bra has underwires, they should lie flat against the sternum (not the breast), along the infra-mammary fold, and should not dig into the chest or the breasts, rub or poke out at the front.
  • The breasts should be enclosed by the cups and there should be a smooth line where the fabric at the top of the cup ends.

Fitting difficulties

Women often find it difficult (almost impossible) to find the correct bra size. In order to achieve perfect fitting consistently, a bra would have to be custom-made by a dressmaker who specializes in bra-making. Since most of us can’t afford the time or money to go this route, we rely on companies that manufacture intimate apparel. Due to this “one-size-fits-all” manufacturing process, bra-fitting is fraught with many difficulties, especially since breasts vary in the position on the chest, and in their diameters. This could be the reason why research has consistently shown that approximately 85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size! Much of this has to do with women simply not re-checking their size each time they make a bra purchase.  Glamorise is one bra manufacturer that takes pride in producing bras that have band and cup sizes that are proportionally calculated to produce a better fit. Due to this proportional design, they come as close as possible to a custom-made bra.

Health problems

I’ve read many articles about the benefits of wearing bras. However, there are cases where they can actually make things worse! This is because the vast majority of women wear bras that are ill-fitting. For instance, rather than keeping the breasts away from the chest wall, bras that are too tight can compress them against the chest even further. This also pulls the upper thoracic and cervical vertebrae (spine) forward and down, interfering with back, shoulder and chest movement.

·        Shoulder pain

One of the results of wearing a bra that doesn’t fit properly is shoulder pain. The shoulder pain is caused when the shoulder straps sustain most of the weight of the breast. This can lead to a deep groove that can be seen over the shoulder. In addition, the use of thin straps, such as spaghetti straps, can exert pressure on the trapezius muscle, resulting in temporary symptoms such as neck and shoulder pain; numbness and tingling in the arm; and headaches.

·         Back pain

Back pain is more common among large-breasted women, who wear bras offering insufficient support. In extreme cases, such discomfort can lead women to seek breast reduction surgery. Ironically, according to research conducted by Royal Free Hampstead Hospital in the U.K., it was determined that after consulting bra fitting experts, 100% of patients recommended for breast reduction surgery, had been wearing the wrong size bra! By overestimating the width of their back and underestimating cup size, the result is that the weight of the breasts is being carried by the shoulders, rather than supported around the chest. This is what contributes to back pain. Women who notice that their bra straps are slipping or the back of their bra is riding up, are usually wearing a bra that is not the proper size.

The Bottom Line

Measure and re-measure every time you buy a new bra to ensure that you’re wearing the correct bra size. When you do this, you’ll have a comfortable fitting bra and you’ll look great! (And, if you buy a pretty color, with a little lace- it’s icing on the cake!)

The Mystery in Sports Bras

Simply put, if you are a women and active, you need a sports bra. Sports bras are designed to maximize the support of the breast and minimize the bounce. Because the breast’s skin and ligaments don’t provide ample support during activity, repeated vigorous motion increases the chance of overstretching and ultimately permanently sagging breasts.

Even if you have small breasts, you can greatly benefit from properly fitting sports bra.  Sports bras with poor support can lead to tension and strain in the upper back and neck. The excess weight at the front can mean the back muscles have to work harder to keep the shoulders in the correct position.

The problem with most sports bras is that they are made by “sports companies” who don’t necessarily know how to make a good fitting and performing bra.  Glamorise® has been making bras for over 75 years and finally two years ago decided that they would use their expertise to develop a sports bra.  Today they offer three different sports bras made of a unique wicking material called Sorbtek™ styles 1006, 1206 front hook version of 1006 and back support 1005 and  currently they are ready to announce their newest item this spring called Glamorise® Sport Max style 1207.  A

To pick the best sports bra for you, read on and find out what type of bra you think you need.

How much support do I need in my sports bra?

How much support you need depends on the activity you are engaged in. Take a look at this chart for help in choosing the best sports bras for you.

Low Impact

  • Walking
  • Yoga
  • Weight Training

Medium Impact

  • Cycling
  • Fast Walking
  • Inline Skating

High Impact

  • Running
  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Horseback Riding

Types of Sports Bras

To support your breasts, sports bras employ two basic techniques:

Compression: This style bra works by squeezing your breasts tightly against you. They are generally made from very elastic fabrics which stretch snugly against so that you don’t bounce. Compression sports bras are better suited for women with small to medium sized breasts. Racerback versions will help add a bit more support if you need it

Encapsulation: This style bra separates each breast in its own cup to provide shape avoiding the “uni-boob” look. It usually provides underwire support and has hooks, snaps, or a zipper in the front or back. It’s essentially a beefed up version of a regular bra. This style is a must for women with larger breasts.

Beyond choosing the type of support, you will also want to consider the various styles of sports bras. Some bras are intended to be worn as outerwear whereas others are intended to be worn more traditionally as underwear. This is a personal preference and you should choose accordingly. Designers make sure that those intended as outerwear offer more coverage.

The other important style concern is the method of closure. Compression bras tend to lack any closure system and are simply a very elastic band that you will pull down over your head. Large-breasted women sometimes find that a compression bra will not stretch enough to pull on. Sports bras with a traditional hook and eye closure system are readily available and you will also sometimes find zippers in place of hooks. A zip front is a style that smaller breasted women find comfortable and easy to put on. Just make sure that any metal or plastic is properly cushioned and won’t chafe you.

How To Choose A Sports Bra

There are three basic factors to keep in mind when choosing a sports bra:

Support:
To minimize the amount of bounce, you need to select a bra that accounts for both your level of activity and the size of your breasts. Naturally, larger breasts require a greater amount of support. To determine your bra size, use our Fitting Room.

Different activities result in different levels of breast movement (look at the chart above). Choose a sports bra that properly matches how much your breasts will be moving. When you try on a sports bras, try to mimic the movements you will be making to see which bra feels best. Do jumping jacks, run in place, and swing your arms side to side to make sure you are comfortable and feel supported when moving.

Comfort fit

Do you feel comfortable? It’s a simple question but don’t accept anything less than a good fit. The bra should stay in place and not chafe you as you move. A wide elastic rib band will help prevent your sports bra from riding up. Make sure that all fasteners, zippers, or underwires are properly cushioned so that they can’t irritate you. Also look for smooth seamless fabric so that the bra won’t chafe you. Some sports bras put the seams on the outside to prevent chafing.

Breathability and Moisture Control

An important feature of a good sports bra is its ability to draw moisture away from your skin and in the process keep you cool. Manufactures often mix cotton with breathable fabrics like CoolMax or other man-made fibers that are better at wicking sweat away from the body. While cotton is very comfortable, it tends to get soggy and doesn’t allow for quick evaporation.  Glamorise® uses Sorbtek™ in their bras which is a new space age wicking fabric that’s perfect for active women and sports bras.

My Favorite Sports Bra

Putting on your first Glamorise® Sport Max

Your Glamorise® Sport Max is going to feel completely different from any sports bra you have ever used. You’ve never had support like this before. Your first reaction may be that your Sport Max is too small. It’s probably not! Your Sport Max should feel snug and still be comfortable.

Put your Sport Max bra on like a vest. Then start to “hook up” your Sport Max from the BOTTOM and go up! “Tuck and hook” until you get to the top. Once you get your Sports Max fastened, reach in and adjust your breasts in the bra by pulling them up and out toward the underarm so the bra lays flat under your breasts. The breasts should then be held firmly in the upper/fuller portion of the bra. Your nipples should rest just below the arch seam. Your Sport Max should be snug but comfortable, you can feel the support.

To check the fit: Twist your body as in doing waist exercises. If the bra moves more than slightly and does not stay in place, it may be too large for you. For a low impact/comfort fit the bra will feel looser and may move a bit more.  Style 1207 below.

Why Just Underthings strongly suggest Glamorise bras as the solution for all your hard to fit problems.

November 8th, 2008

Over the years many of you have asked us about we stand so firm with Glamorise®.  I thought that I would take some time to explain we we at Just Underthings feel that they offer what our customers need most…true and comfortable fit.  Outside of the fact that they represent a brand that many of our customers have trusted for many years, Glamorise is the world’s most experienced manufacturer of fine quality foundation garments for full-figured women.  We at Just Underthings selected Glamorise® products because they provide a brand that many consumers have trusted for over 85 years.

This brand loyalty means that the consumer has definite expectations about the style, quality, fit and consistency. There’s also an inherent guarantee that she’ll look good when she wears this brand. By choosing Glamorise® you’re selecting a brand that is totally committed to providing the highest quality, most intelligently designed bras in the world.

Glamorise® maintains an uncompromising approach to fit that is the basis for our selection at Just Underthings.

Glamorise®-True-Grading™ vs. cross-grading

Modern industry practices encourage cross-grading because it is more efficient thus quicker and less costly to produce.  This means that differently sized bras may share identically sized parts- like underwires, for example.  They cut corners to save manufacturing expenses and increase their profits without regard to fit. Glamorise has chosen a more customized approach to manufacturing and fitting their garments called True-Grading™.

A typical cross-graded line uses only 16 differently sized underwires to fit a range of 66 sizes.  With Glamorise® True-Grading™, each and every component is distinctly sized to fit proportionately throughout the range.  Then, each size range is expertly fit on a live model, at art their designers have passed from one generation to the next over the last eighty years.  True-Grading™ makes Glamorise® fit the best in the business.

What is the Glamorise® difference?

  • They are the world’s oldest fully dedicated full-figure intimate apparel manufacturer.
  • They care fanatically about every detail.  Their customers demand high performance and top quality.
  • On average, their craftspeople have over 20 years experience with Glamorise® and they know the difference between producing a good product and a great one.
  • Whether a bra is high fashion like Glamorise® Elegance™ or our traditional Magic Lift™ their master designers make sure it’s always perfectly proportioned for larger sizes and hard to find sizes like Exclusively A & B.
  • They have unmatched variety within size categories.

There are simply no better-fitting foundations in the world for full-figured women because no company offers greater consistency across and through sizing.

Glamorise and the full figure woman…

November 8th, 2008

Just Underthings News Search

A recent folio from Glamorise

The full-figured woman is one of the best customers around.

She is willing to pay for quality and she’s loyal to those who provide it.  Merchants who want to reach this customer and maximize sales must ask themselves.

·        Am I offering a wide size range?  Do my customers know this?

·        Am I highlighting and explaining high-value features?

·        Am I offering a wide range of styles

Aging women are one of the fastest growing, most affluent segments of the world’s population.  Many have spent the past few decades wearing underwire bras because they love the way a wire shapes.  Now they’d like to continue wearing wires but as their bodies change and their bra sizes increase, these women are actively searching for an underwire bra that provides shap, support….and comfor too.

What these consumers need is an underwire bra designed exclusively for full-figured women, not just an average-sized bra made larger.  The Glamorise Wonderwire line of bras features a custom-designed wire inside a cushioned foam channel so there’s never any pinching or poking.  In wear-testing, full-figured women loved an underwire bra could provide so much support yet feel so good.

Over-forty women, many now full-figured, make up one of the largest consumer groups in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe.  Retailers who want their fair share of this market must aggressively work to fill the unmet need for comfortable underwires by stocking them in larger sizes, and equally importantly, hightlighting underwire bras designed to fit larger sizes with comfort.

Feature Hunt - searching for smart straps

Ask a full-figured woman what she doesn’t like about her bra and chances are she’ll say, “the straps!”.  In fact, Glamorise research shows that strap problems, from digging in t slipping down, is the number one bra complaint among full-figured women.  Glamorise designers are not surprised.  “A properly designed, well-made strap is central to the comfort and fit of any bra, but especially a full-figure bra,” says designer Linda Tausz.  “Many manufacturers don’t change the design or grade of straps when they make larger sizes and that can lead to real comfort problems.”

Through research, we’ve learned that once a woman finds a strap that works for her, she’ll search for it whenever she’s bra shopping.  We’ve responded by offering a wide range of strap options on a variety of bra styles.  “Full-figured consumers are will in to pay more for a better strap,” say Tausz, “and it makes good sense to give them what they want.”

“Full-figured consumers are willing to pay more for a better strap.”

Casual Trend and Intimates

There’s no mistaking the global shift toward more casual fashions, both in the workplace and after office hours.  For full-figured women, this is great news as their wardrobe options continue to gro.  This welcome trend has spurred a major trend of its own: an increasing number of full-figured consumers shopping for casual intimates such as leisure bras, once warn only at home and for sleeping.

But while dressed down designs mean more freedom when it comes to choosing chic, comfortable clothing, it’s often tough for full-figured women to find intimates that work with today’s looser-fitting styles.  That’s because many retailers have expanded their casual full-figured apparel lines but have not added a range fo complementary foundations.  This creates a frustrating shopping experience for full-figured women who often find far fewer foundation choices than their smaller sized peers.

Merchants who want to minimize sales to their full-figured consumers must offer quality leisure bras with their unique combination of fit, comfort and light support.

JustUnderthings - Full Figure Fashions and Shopping Online By SF Scott

Just imagine living in a world peopled by clones that are dressed in the same style-less outfits, in the same colors, with the same hairstyle and make-up…that just doesn’t sound very stimulating at all. This world isn’t black and white, beige and brown…if it were life would be quite bland, lifeless and unimaginative.

Finally, the world of fashion has done an about face, a 180 degree spin. They have turned and looked about and noticed that not every one is a perfect 5, 7 or 9…and that this somewhat bigoted perception that was seemingly embraced by the design moguls, has not only affected another avenue of earnings for these designers but had overlooked a more rounded and robust segment of our society. Full figure fashion is as real and has the same needs as the 5, 7 and 9’s.

Being able to find fashions that are appealing and proportioned for a full figured woman…should be as easy to access as clothing for a woman that is petite and small framed. They finally figured out that, they were actually losing a huge piece of the financial pie because of their pigeon-holed focus.

Now, what woman doesn’t crave a unique look, a look that stands out from the crowd. It doesn’t have to be flashy and garnished with sequins, flowers and polka dots to get attention…quiet is also good. We all seek a look that screams…’Wow, what a smashing outfit’. No matter what body type you occupy whether it is a full figure, average or slim, the right outfit, with the right fit will cause heads to turn. And there is definitely nothing wrong with announcing that your outfit was designed by one of the better known designers, that is something I know I enjoy sharing.

So being able to create that special look, should be easy and you should not have to spend endless exhausting hours visiting one boutique after another.

Their just isn’t any reason why your shopping experience shouldn’t be a delightful adventure, loaded with an abundant collection of fashions that caters to your enchanting and elegant dimensions. http://afullfigure.info/ is the doorway that leads to a world of flattering styles all of that and more right at your finger tips, all you gotta’ do is log on…So drop by and find out more about the fashion world and what they have to offer at http://afullfigure.info/

Just Underthins - Shopping Online For Clothing That Looks Great

(Wed Dec 5th, 2007, by Andrea Dilea)

If you have some serious curves, you’ll probably find that the plus size department in stores in your area leave a lot to be desired. The selection is sparse, and the clothes that most plus size sections offer are boxy and unbecoming. Though the selection for the plus size woman is improving, it can still be a real challenge to locate an outfit that flatters you. When searching for clothes that look nice and fit well, specialty retailers are a good place to start. There are many stores that offer a selection of clothes for plus size women. Torrid, Lane Bryant and Fashion Bug Plus all cater to plus size women. No matter what your age, you can find what you are looking for at these stores that offer a vast selection of styles and types of clothing. Depending on where you live, you may not have even one of these specialty plus size stores. Thankfully, we have the Internet, and you can turn there to help you with your plus size shopping needs.

There are many specialty retailers that have a website. There are even some plus size boutiques that are run entirely online. One of the advantages of shopping online for clothing is that you can see everything that is available. There are a few disadvantages of shopping online. One of those disadvantages is not being able to try anything on before you buy it. It is important to be sure about the article of clothing before you purchase it. It is sometimes difficult to return items purchased online, be sure to check the website’s return policy. Other limitations for shopping online are costs and shipping time.

When purchasing plus size clothing online, there are often many tools available through the retailers that can help you find the best fit possible. Charts are usually available to convert different types of sizes into specific measurements, and some online retailers offer computerized models that can help you find what will fit your shape the best. Additionally, you can often find information about how different brands of clothing have fit others, such as if the brand tends to run smaller or larger. Specific information on how to take your own measurements is often available, assuring you will receive clothing that fits well.

If you can’t find the types of clothes you want to impress others, try shopping at another store. It might be a physical store or a plus-size store online, and you will have a good chance of buying what you really want. Many new lines of clothing are available that cater specifically to plus size women. The hard part is locating them. When you consider what is available online and at specialty stores, the range of products available is quite broad. From there it is easy to find a nice outfit, suitable for everyday wear or something more formal.

Underthings - Do You Need a Bra?

December 7th, 2007

JustUnderthings - Do You Need a Bra?

Ever since the male species became obsessed with female breasts, things were never the same. Women suddenly became conscious of them - whether they were big enough and looked right. Fashion found a way of exploiting them and pop star Madonna gave new meaning to them with her outrageous outfits. Not surprisingly, the one thing most women are afraid of nowadays is when gravity finally catches up with them and pulls their breasts down to oblivion.

Hope, however, springs eternal, more so in troubled times. When Caresse Crosby - also known as Mary Phelps Jacobs - first patented the modern bra in November 1914, women believed their troubles were over. Tormented by thoughts of drooping breasts, many began wearing bras to prevent this tragedy from happening. And if sales are a good indication of how popular bras have become, the figures are enormously encouraging.

From Crosby’s initial design made from two handkerchiefs sewn together, bras now come in many shapes and sizes to suit every woman’s need. The industry has grown by leaps and bounds and is now worth over $20 million.

Ironically, although many were impressed by Crosby’s invention when she wore it on the dance floor, sales were slow. Crosby managed to sell only one for a dollar and for a while it seemed that the bra was doomed to be forgotten.

Things suddenly changed when she sold the idea to the Warner Brothers Corset Company of America for $15,000. When it hit the stores, the bra suddenly became the most popular thing on earth - at least to most women anyway. That attitude remains to this day.

Still, are bras really worth the attention they’re getting? Can they really help the breasts and prevent sagging? Or are they just a cute cosmetic cover-up?

While a good bra can make the breasts look better, Dr. Christine Haycock, a surgeon at New Jersey Medical School in Newark, said it has no effect whatsoever on their tendency to sag which is an inherited quality. She adds that a lifetime of bra wearing does little to preserve the natural curves of the breasts.

That wrong notion began when doctors earlier thought that the ligaments that support the breasts had to be aided by a bra to prevent a pendulous profile. But the truth turned out to be much different. How the ligaments react to gravity is largely a matter of skin elasticity, experts say. And how elastic your skin is all boils down to heredity. Thus, breasts that are doomed to droop at a certain time will eventually do so regardless of how long a woman wears a bra.

“It’s true that most women’s breasts lose their perk with age and extremely large-breasted women will, in general, be affected earlier and to a certain degree. But the reasons aren’t related to ligaments or even strictly dependent on breast size. Much more important are inherited characteristics such as skin elasticity and breast density which reflects the ratio of lightweight fat to heavier glands,” explained Deborah Franklin in Health magazine.

Another common myth is that exercising without a bra can damage the breasts. This has prompted female athletes to purchase unnecessary sports bras and similar clothing that supposedly protect the breasts. Their anxiety appears to be reasonable. Vigorous exercise, after all, puts a lot of strain on the breasts, causing them to bounce up and down in unimaginable ways.

But even under this kind of torture, Haycock said breasts can manage quite well and no harm is done. So, by and large, you don’t need a sports bra unless you feel pain while exercising which comes from skin stretching.

If breast size is a problem, a good bra can improve the shape and contours of the breasts. For those who yearn for bigger breasts but are afraid of surgery, the Clevastin Natural Breast Enlargement System may help. This special herbal system combines the dual power of Clevastin capsules that are packed with breast-enhancing compounds similar to the ones produced naturally by your own body, and the Clevastin accelerator gel cream that penetrates deep into the outer layers of the breasts for maximum results.
